Locking Up the Mag Locks

I can’t show the photo I have of this in the wild as it hasn’t been fixed, yet…

Mag locks are everywhere and are seriously useful things.

Please, though, make sure the wires aren’t on the insecure side. Or worse, in a junction box, at eye level, secured with two Philip’s screws that just begs to be opened. Same with the controller – if it’s on the insecure side behind a simple panel, disconnecting the lock is trivial (see photo – snip or pull wire).

It’s also worth giving your mag lock a quick check for foreign bodies on the magnet face and a good shove on occasion. Not only can the alignment drift over time, reducing the holding force, but sticking something to the magnet is a common way to intentionally weaken the force, making it easier to barge through the door later.

And when you’re planning, remember mag locks fail insecure, but may have backup power. This has implications for emergency planning as well as security. Ensure you and your team know your system’s failure modes and how it will behave in a power cut.
